## About
Amanyangyun is probably the most extraordinary conservation project in KHA's portfolio — and Kerry Hill's last completed work before his death in August 2018.
The project began as a rescue mission: **10,000 ancient camphor trees** (some over 1,000 years old) and **50 historic Ming and Qing dynasty buildings** (200–500 years old) were threatened by dam construction in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province. They were transported 600 kilometres to a site on the outskirts of Shanghai, where they were meticulously reassembled.
KHA's task was to work alongside these relocated historic structures — not compete with them. The practice inserted **new-build contemporary pavilions** using signature monochrome surfaces, clean lines, and pure geometries that exist in deliberate contrast to, and harmony with, the ancient timber frames. Twenty-six Ming and Qing dynasty villas form the heritage accommodation; KHA's new structures house the resort facilities.
The project was described as *"a living museum"* and won **Hotel of the Year at the AHEAD Asia 2019 awards**.
> *"A landscape of ancient camphor trees and historic buildings that will last for generations."*
