The answer was the **washi-paper lantern lobby**: a soaring double-height space on the 33rd floor in which a giant structure of layered washi (Japanese paper) stretched across a Shoji frame fills the upper volume. It became the project's defining image and a masterclass in spatial surprise — the lantern is invisible from outside, revealed only as guests ascend from the street. **Materials** anchor the project in Japanese craft: Japanese sen wood, black basalt stone, camphor wood, washi paper, and natural fabric. Every suite has split-level bedrooms with shoji screens and engawa (verandah-like) walkways. Stone gardens with cherry blossoms occupy the 33rd-floor terrace. > *"The array and sequence of interior spaces epitomise Kerry Hill's perceptive and original reading of another culture's architectural traditions."* — AIA jury citation, 2015 ## Awards - **2015** — AIA National Award for International Architecture ## Reviews & Further Reading - [Sense of magic: Aman Tokyo — ArchitectureAu](https://architectureau.com/articles/aman-tokyo/) - [Aman Tokyo — Archilovers](https://www.archilovers.com/projects/152356/aman-tokyo.html) - [2015 National Architecture Awards: International Award — ArchitectureAu](https://architectureau.com/articles/2015-national-architecture-awards-international-architecture-award-1/) - [A Resort in the Sky — The Cool Hunter](https://thecoolhunter.net/aman-hotel-tokyo-resort-sky/)
